What are some habits that destroy our skin?

Here is a list of some unfortunately common habits that damage the skin.

  1. Constantly touching your face and removing pimples. Your fingers are full of germs -even if you’re cleanest person in the world, no one is sanitising their hands every three seconds. Leave your face alone as much as possible to minimise breakouts. If you really have to squeeze out a blackhead don’t do it with your bare fingers: you could wrap a clean napkin around them. A much better option would be to schedule a mechanical extraction with an aesthetician, but I understand that sometimes it’s almost impossible to resist the temptation.
  2. Refusing to wear sunscreen. No, having a dark complexion doesn’t mean your skin won’t get damaged. And no, wearing some other “natural alternative” won’t protect your skin. No matter your ethnicity sunscreen is necessary to protect your skin from UV damage. Of course ten minutes under the sun might not cause much of an issue, but if you spend hours outdoor or tanning at the beach you have to wear it, 30 SPF or higher. There’s no getting around it.
  3. Eating too much dairy. Listen…I am Italian. I know that dairy is delicious and it’s pretty hard to shut it off your diet, but dairy has been proven to cause acne by increasing insulin levels. Besides, most people in the world are lactose intolerant and simply can’t digest it, which alone is a great reason to avoid it.
  4. Putting weird kitchen ingredients such as lemon on your face. I have written so many answers about this topic so I won’t get into it too much this time around, but believe me, using these ingredients is damaging for your skin. Just because a lot of people do something it doesn’t mean it’s beneficial! If you’re wondering, I am a professional cosmetic chemist but I also have a degree in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. This means that I have an understanding of the skin’s physiology and when I say something could damage your skin I base it off scientific research.
  5. Using natural skincare only. Not only truly natural skincare does not exist, in the rare cases when someone can actually say “there are no weird ingredients here, no preservatives, etc” this actually means the product was very poorly formulated. If it doesn’t have preservatives you’ll have to throw it away very fast, and are you sure the person who sold it to you did any stability tests to make sure it’s safe? “Chemical” ingredients (I REPEAT, everything is a chemical including water) such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salycilic acid, petrolatum etc have a proven record of safety and efficacy and are much better for your skin than just slathering some coconut oil on it. Did you know coconut oil is comedogenic? It’s great for hair, though.

Hope this helped! Let me know if you need any more information.

Can you share any myth about skincare which you feel people are ruining their skin?

There are so many I could answer ten identical questions…

Here are some of the most common things people do that are harmful for the skin:

  1. Using toothpaste on an acne breakout. This is NOT beneficial. Toothpaste can actually make your breakouts worse because of its drying agents! Acne is already a lot to deal with; be careful and do your research before you trust a friend’s suggestion.
  2. Using coconut oil to “solve” all skin problems. I have heard it all: coconut oil instead of sunscreen(!), coconut oil for anti-aging, coconut oil as an eye cream…it’s absurd how overrated it is. Coconut oil is not anti-aging, shouldn’t be used on your eyes and it certainly does NOT substitute sunscreen. That said I am not against coconut oil as an ingredient in a formulation, but I advise against using it alone on your skin as it’s comedogenic.
  3. Drinking water thinking that’s the only way to fix dry skin, no products needed. The water you drink gets distributed to the whole body, therefore your skin doesn’t get much of it. I know this is bad news for those who hate using skincare, but applying hydrating products topically is the best way to properly hydrate the skin.
  4. Exfoliating too little because some think it’s useless, or too often because they think the more, the better. The first will make your skin dull, the second leads to overexfoliation (=dryness, redness, sensitivity, etc). You don’t need to exfoliate every day and you don’t need to scrub your skin harshly if you’re using physical exfoliants…a couple times a week with a chemical exfoliant is perfectly fine for most skin types.
  5. Some people seem to believe that after some time products stop working as your skin “adapts” to the ingredients. Skin doesn’t adapt to ingredients: they continue to work, but once you reach a plateau you won’t notice the same dramatic effects. There’s no need to retire the cream you love in fear it won’t do anything for you anymore, perhaps for a new product that might or might not be as effective. Great skincare products aren’t that easy to get…once you find one it’s a good idea to stick with it for as long as you see fit.

Hope this helps!

What are the popular myths about skin aging and wrinkles?

I would say one popular myth is that skincare products can erase wrinkles or even “reverse” the aging process. That’s not how it works.

Yes, retinol can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but it can’t make the wrinkles completely disappear from your face. In order to do that you would need to get a face lift or some other type of plastic surgery, which is expensive and comes with some risks.

This is why prevention is so important. Take care of your skin while you’re in your twenties and thirties, protect it from the sun, try to quit smoking (I was a smoker myself, I know it’s not easy), don’t torture the delicate skin around your eyes, etc.

Wrinkles and sagging cannot be avoided -we’ll all show signs of aging at some point- so it’s not like we will look 25 forever, but we can try to aim for the best possible results.

Be aware that plenty of celebrities who say they have never used Botox or had any plastic surgery are flat out lying. Don’t be fooled into thinking certain results can be achieved “naturally”. It’s incredibly harmful and only fuels toxic insecurity in women and men.

Celebrities need to sell skincare and makeup products, as they’re often chosen to be the face of important brands or they create their own line themselves. They know if they disclosed their skin looks that good not because of the creams they use, but because they have a great plastic surgeon, business would be affected.

Some people go as far as choosing to never smile again (yes, this is a thing) in order to avoid smile lines. Some never go out in the sun.

I think this is absurd…I cannot tell people what to do, but I would strongly encourage anyone who’s reading this answer to protect their skin in a way that still allows them to live a full life.

I own a skincare brand, I have a blog about skincare, and essentially my professional life entirely revolves around skincare, yet I wouldn’t say I am obsessed with how my skin looks to the point of missing out the good things in life. I don’t wear sunscreen inside the house, for example, which would probably sound outrageous to many “skincare experts” on the internet.

In summary, anti aging skincare products aren’t nearly as powerful as most people wish they’d be. Prevention is essential, but we shouldn’t lose our mind trying to look younger…it’s simply not worth it.

Hope this answer helped!
